About the Book:

This book covers the newly introduced course on Electronics at the B.Sc. Physics (Honours) level. It would also be useful to the students of other discipline taking a basic course on electronics.

In this book the subject-matter has been dealt with in a clear and concise way with many explanatory diagrams. Emphasis has been given to the clarification of the basic physical principles; mathematical details have also been worked out, where necessary. Modern aspects and applications of Electronics have been described to the extent suitable for the beginners. Numerous solved problems have been incorporated to make the students acquainted with the applications of the principles and formulae they have learnt in the text. A variety of questions and problems has also been included for the practice of the students.

The book contains seventeen chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the introductory concepts. In Chapter 2, the modes of electron emission, particularly thermionic emission, are discussed. Electron tubes, specifically the vaccum diode and triode, are considered in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 is devoted to the basic properties of semiconductors. P-N junction diodes are taken care of in Chapter 5. Bipolar transistors are discussed in Chapters 6 and 7. Field-effect transistors together with some special semiconductor devices are contained in Chapter 8. Integrated circuits, operational amplifiers, and their applications are described in Chapter 9. Voltage and power amplifiers, feedback amplifiers and oscillators are considered in Chapters 10, 11, and 12 respectively. Modulation and detection is the subject matter of Chapter 13. Digital electronics has been treated in a comprehensive way in Chapter 14. The cathode ray oscilloscope and its applications are included in Chapter 15. Radio communication and television are considered in Chapters 16 and 17 respectively.

About the Author:

Professor D. Chattopadhyay obtained his Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in Radio Physics and Electronics in 1972 and 1980, respectively from the University of Calcutta. He was awarded the Mouat Medal by the same university in 1985 on successful completion of the Premchand Raychand Studentship. He visited the Technical University in Trondheim, Norway as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1973-74. He also visited the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany, from time to time during 1980 and 1990 as a Guest Scientist. In 1991, he was invited as a Visiting Scientist to the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. His research interest centres around Electronic Transport in Bulk and Low-dimensional Semiconductor Structures. He has a number of publications in internationally reputed journals and has co-authored a few books for the undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has worked as a Professor in the Department of Radio Physics and Electronics, Calcutta University, Kolkata.
