About the Book:

The course content has been completely revised and updated in such a manner so as to be in consonance with syllabus proposed by the U.G.C. Curriculum Development Committee for chemistry.

The course material of B.Sc. Part I is reflected in eleven chapters of the present volume. A few salient features of this volume are: review of the important points is presented after every chapter, mechanisms of all the reactions described in the text are illustrated and finally the subject matter on chemical bonding, stereochemistry and principles of reaction mechanism has been reoriented.


About the Author:

S.M. Mukherji was awarded the D.Sc. degree by Calcutta University in 1944. He had served as Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata and University Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry, Panjab and Kurukshetra Universities. He was an elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, President of the Indian Chemical Society and President, Chemistry Section, Indian Science Congress Association. Professor Mukherji was the co-discoverer of the Colonge-Mukherji Cycloalkylation Reaction. He had published more than 100 research papers in different areas of Organic Chemistry and had supervised Ph.D. theses of a large number of students.


S.P. Singh, obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Lucknow in 1964. He was appointed as Lecturer in Kurukshetra University in 1965 where he had served as the Chairman, Chemistry Department and is now serving as Professor Emeritus for life. Professor Singh was also associated with the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA as a Post-doc. Fellow, Senior Fulbright Scholar, Visiting Research Professor and subsequently with the University of Bath, UK as INSA-Royal Society Fellow on two occasions.

Professor Singh has published more than 150 research papers and reviews in professional journals. He has served a number of professional bodies such as the President, Section of Chemical Sciences, and subsequently the General Secretary (outstn.) of the Indian Science Congress Association, Convener of the U.G.C. Panel in Chemistry, Nodal Person of the U.G.C. Committee for Curriculum Development in Chemistry and a Trustee of the National Book Trust, India. For his services in the area of Chemical Sciences, he was awarded Acharya P.C. Ray Memorial Medal and Life Time Achievement Award of the Indian Chemical Society.


R.P. Kapoor, Professor and Coordinator, Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy, Yamuna Nagar got his Ph.D. degree from Agra University, Agra in 1963. After a brief stint of teaching at Agra College, Agra (1963-64) he joined the faculty at Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 1964 where he worked till 1997. He was Chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1993-1996. In 1997 he joined Guru Nanak Khalsa Post Graduate College, Yamuna Nagar as a Visiting Professor to establish a new centre of M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry (Pharmaceuticals), where he worked till 2005. He has published more than 70 research papers covering various aspects of Organic Chemistry, i.e., reaction mechanism, medicinal chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry in national and international journals.


Rameshwar Dass, Assoicate Professor and Head of P.G. Department of Industrial Chemistry, Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Yamuna Nagar has obtained his Ph.D. degree from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 1995. He joined this College in 1995 and is teaching P.G. classes since 1997. He has published more than 40 research papers in international journals. He has supervised two Ph.D. and seven M.Phil. candidates. His current research interests include analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry.
