This book has been designed to meet the needs of the Civil Engineering Curricula for the courses in the subject of Geotechnical Engineering of Indian Universities. The topics have been dealt with in a logical sequence and the concepts explained in a lucid manner. Adequate number of well-graded illustrative examples and problems for practice have been included; the answers for the latter are given at the end of the book. Summary of main points and references are given at the end of each chapter. References have been made to the relevant Indian Standard Codes at appropriate places. A large number of objective questions are given along with the answers at the end.
Minor revision/additions have been made in a few chapters with a view to bringing the subject matter up-to-date.
A new chapter on "Flexible Retaining Structures" has been added in this edition.

About the Author: |
Dr. C. Venkatramaiah graduated in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, Kakinada (A.P.), obtained the M.Sc. (Engg.) Degree in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy (Madras University), and the Ph.D. Degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. The author served on the faculties of the College of Engineering, Kakinada, and the College of Engineering, Guindy, before joining the Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering, Tirupati in 1962. He rose to the position of Reader in 1964 and Professor in 1976, and retired in 1996. Later, he served as Professor and Head of Civil Engineering at the RVR & JC College of Engineering, Guntur. He has over four decades of teaching experience, and has dealt with a wide variety of subjects in Civil Engineering.
The author has to his credit technical papers and articles, and has authored books in the areas of Geotechnical Engineering, Surveying, Engineering Mechanics, and Structural Analysis, besides books on English and General Knowledge.
The author held various positions of academic and administrative responsibility, such as Dean and Principal, and was recipient of prizes and awards for merit in studies and teaching.
This book is the outcomes of his long and sustained teaching effort of over four decades.
