About the Book:

This monograph is an attempt to put together recent Indian experience in Energy Efficient and Environment Friendly Building Technologies. The work at CST (formerly ASTRA), Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, is the main source of inspiration for this work. It is intended to be used as a textbook for an Elective Course offered by the Visweswaraya Technological University to students of Civil Engineering. It is also hoped that it will interest practicing Architects and Civil Engineers.

About the Author:

K S Jagadish Graduated in Civil Engineering in 1961 from Mysore University and completed his doctorate in Structural Engineering from Indian Institute of Science in 1969. Joined the Faculty of Indian Institute of Science in 1967.Spent an year as Post Doctoral Fellow at Karlsruhe University in Germany from September 1972.Eventually became Professor of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute in 1984.He was also concurrently Chairman of Astra Centre of the Institute from 1983 to 1989.He retired in 2002 and took up Professor of Post Graduate Studies at R.V. College of Engineering in 2006. He retired from this position in 2015.His interests are in the areas of Structural Dynamics, Structural Masonry, Theory of Shells, Alternative Buildings and Rural Energy Systems. He is also associated with a voluntary agency GRAMAVIDYA promoting Alternative Technologies. Has authored four books and more than 100 technical papers.

B V Venkatarama Reddy PhD in Structural Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Currently working as Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science. Structural masonry, energy efficient alternative building materials and technologies, rammed-earth structures and recycling of solid wastes for building materials represent the broad areas of research interest. Has 66 publications, guided doctoral research programmes and consultant to several projects on alternative building technologies. Member of the technical committees of Bureau of Indian Standards. Recipient of Prof. Satish Dhawan award for young Engineers instituted by the Government of Karnataka.

K S Nanjunda Rao currently working as Principal Research Scientist in the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Obtained PhD degree in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in 1995. He is active in teaching, research and consultancy. His research interests include mechanics of composite plates and shells, finite element structural analysis, structural masonry, reinforced and prestressed concrete, earthquake resistant design of structures and alternative building materials. He is also actively involved in experimental facilities like Shock Table testing and Strong Floor development for Structural Testing.
