About the Book:

Mechanics of Materials, or the Strength of Materials as it had been called in a traditional way is an important part of the undergraduate syllabi of many engineering disciplines. This book has been designed, specially for the benefit of undergraduate students in the civil, mechanical, aeronautical, aerospace and naval-architecture engineering. The importance has been given to basic concepts and fundamental theory with applications to real-life problems. Each chapter contains a large number of solved problems of varied nature with explanations at each step in simple language that will facilitate to understand with ease the basic principles covered in the topics of this book. Discussions related to a particular theory are brief and clear, yet thorough. In most cases, this is followed by a 'procedure of analysis' which provides the students a summary of the important concepts and a systematic approach to apply the theory. Free-body diagrams are used throughout this book to determine external and internal forces during the analysis of problems to make the students understand the technique of superposition of loadings and the resulting stresses and deformations. About 1000 problems with solutions and answers are given in the book, and SI units have been used.

The contents of the book have been selected to cover also the syllabi of various technical universities, professional institute examinations like A.M.I.E. and the competitive examinations namely I.E.S., U.P.S.C., and GATE of the country.

About the Author:

Adarsh Swaroop is working as a Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering at Sagar Institute of Science, Technology and Research (RGPV), Bhopal. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Roorkee, then University of Roorkee, in 1961. He worked for one year as design engineer in Earth Dam Design division at Central Design Directorate of Irrigation Department (U.P), Lucknow. During the period 1962-65, he was recipient of Technical Teaching Fellowship from then Union Ministry of Scientific and Cultural Affairs, and worked at IIT Roorkee, where he had teaching assignments at undergraduate level and obtained his Master's degree. From the year 1965 to 1976, he was a member of faculty of Civil Engineering at Maulana Azad College of Technology, now it is a NIT, at Bhopal. He had worked on several industry-oriented sponsored research projects besides his teaching assignments at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Here, he guided several M.Tech theses. He has been a guide to Ph.D Scholars as well. He joined M/S Bharat Heavy Electricals, Bhopal in the year 1976. In the tenure of 22 years of working he had been involved in numerous new developmental projects in the area of Hydro-turbines and has done pioneering work for the organisation in the design and development of Francis, Bulb and Reversible Pump-Turbine runner blading system. He developed computer-aided design procedures to yield improved, hydraulically efficient and structurally sound product. He conducted stress analysis of critical components like runner, spiral casing, stay rings, inlet valves etc. and vibration analysis of the runner under hydraulic loadings. On the whole he has over 45 years of experience in teaching, design, research and development. Professor Adarsh Swaroop has published several research papers both in national and international journal of repute, namely ASME, ASCE, IAHR, Water Power and Dam Construction—International Dam Engineering, Irrigation & Power India, etc. He received twice the best research paper award from Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC)-USA at Bangalore center and once from National Society of Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power-India.

Presently he is one of the reviewers for technical papers of authors who submit for publication on 'Dam Engineering' section of the journal "International-Waterpower and Dam Constructions" which is a publication from U.K.

  • Review:

"The text-book is unique collection of various diversified topics. It imparts full mathematical treatment to the entire syllabus. A variety of typical problems to cater the need of competitive examinations. A large number of explanatory examples would cover the need of student around the country. Much more material that can be taught in a single course is included in this book, and thus instructors have the opportunity to select the topics they wish to cover. The problems are placed at the end of the each chapter which would prevent presentation of subject matter from any break-ups."
