About the Book:

Production and Operations Management is a subject, which reveals the essence of designing the product/service and delivering it to the user. It helps to design engineers, production managers and line managers involved in decision making regarding the stages involved in designing and manufacturing the product/service and satisfying the preferences of end user.

This book is divided into four units. The first unit is dealt with fundamentals of production and operations management also giving details of manufacturing facilities and the layout of facilities. Here various methods of selecting proper location for the plant are discussed in detail with numerical examples. Various types of layouts, their advantages and limitations are also given.

The second unit deals with forecasting, which is an essential tool for a decision maker to decide the requirement of facilities, materials, capacities etc., is well exemplified to help production managers make appropriate decision regarding their requirements. In this unit a detailed discussion regarding work-study is made which is a powerful tool in scheduling the production operations. It is well known that operation level planning is very important in achieving efficient production plan.

In the third unit production planning techniques are discussed to help production managers to use these techniques to carryout their planning activity. An effort is made to provide details of planning for materials, inventory control and management of materials.

Every one of us talks about quality every day in various contexts. But what is quality? How it is decided? What method is used to test quality? All this is discussed in the fourth unit, which is dedicated to the discussion on quality.

The present book will also fulfill the requirements of professional students and practicing managers.


About the Author:

P Ramamurthy was born in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh in 1940. He had his schooling at Bellary in Karnataka. He completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1964 from B.D.T. College of Engineering at Davangere in Karnataka. He did his M.Tech. in ‘Heat Power’ from J.N.T. University, Hyderabad in the year 1982.

Prof. P Ramamurthy received his graduation in Industrial Engineering from N.I.T.I.E., Bombay and P.G.D.B.A. from Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu. He pursued research in Industrial Engineering at N.I.T.I.E. Bombay. He started his teaching career in 1964. In 1966, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Engineering College, Anantapur (the then Government College of Engineering, Anantapur). He served the college in various positions and retired as Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the year 2000.Since his retirement he served Intell Engineering College, Anantapur up to 2007. He had been the Principal of P.V.K.K. Institute of Technology, Anantapur from 2009 to 2010. He was also a visiting professor for Production and Operations Management in about six renowned colleges.

Mr. P Ramamurthy authored books on Management Science and Industrial Engineering (common to all branches), Operations Research and Production, and Operations Management.
