About the Book:

This book on “Basics of Surface Technology” has been written mainly for the undergraduate students of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Mechanical, Production and Maintenance Engineering in Technical universities. Many structural components and engineering machine parts lose their function and fail due to surface degradation causing shut down of the plant involving loss of crores of rupees and man hours. It is very essential to maintain the parts of the structure and machines in proper condition so that continuous production can be ensured. The engineering students should have a thorough knowledge of surface engineering and technology so that they can take preventive measures to stop or minimize the break down of the engineering components.

As in many structural and production machineries iron base alloys and nickel base super alloys are used, the metallurgical background of these materials is described in the second chapter. The basics of surface degradation like wear, erosion, corrosion, oxidation, and hot corrosion are explained in the next chapter. Surface treatments to withstand aggressive environments are given in the following chapters dealing with diffusional and non-diffusional processes.

Surface coatings based on chemical and electro-chemical depositions, welding and cladding are presented and discussed in detail. Advanced methods of surface treatment by thermal spraying, physical vapour deposition and chemical vapour deposition for high technological applications are explained with suitable illustrations for basic understanding of the process.

Testing methods for the quality and soundness of the coated surface and the international standards are given following which the industrial applications of the surface treatment for different requirements are discussed.

Finally, for the benefit of undergraduate and postgraduate students, a chapter on questions has been added which will be very useful to have a thorough understanding of the subject and solve any practical problems in surface technology.

About the Author:

Prof. Dr. M Kamaraj is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. After completing his PhD at IIT Madras, he worked as Research Engineer at EWAC Alloys Ltd. (Larsen Toubro Ltd.), Mumbai. He was also a Research Fellow at Nagaoka University of Technology and STA Fellow at the National Institute of Industrial Safety, Japan. He was a Guest Scientist at Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, Bochum, Germany and a visiting scientist at VSSC, Trivandrum, India. He joined IIT Madras, and has more than 24 years teaching, research and industrial experience in the area of mechanical behaviour of materials, welding, surface engineering, and high temperature materials, creep and fatigue. He has a patent approval (Invention: IN-813918), titled “Highly adhesive nano crystalline diamond coatings on tin coated WC-Co (D/TIN/AI2O3/TICN/WC) tools for industrial applications”. He has guided 15 PhD and 4 MS scholars. He has published more than 150 research publications in leading international engineering journals. He has published a book on Surface Modified Biomedical Titanium Alloys with Mr. Aravind Vadiraj and contributed a chapter on “Microstructure and Wear Studies of Alloyed and Austempered Gray Irons for Automotive Applications” along with Aravind Vadiraj and G Balachandran. He is teaching the subject “Surface Engineering and Technology” for undergraduate and postgraduate students for the past 5 years and the present book is the outcome of rich experience in the area of surface technology.

Prof. Dr. V M Radhakrishnan is professor emeritus (Retired) from IIT Madras, Chennai, and has 40 years of teaching and research experience in the area of machine design, strength of materials, fracture mechanics, high temperature materials, fatigue and creep. He graduated from the University of Madras and earned high PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras, Chennai. He has guided number of PhD research students and was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany and also worked as Research Scientist at the Nuclear Research Centre Jülich, Germany. He was a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut, USA and was a senior research scientist at NASA-Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. He has taught the subject Treatment of Materials and Mechanical Metallurgy to undergraduate students for number of years. The present book is the outcome of his long experience in the area of engineering materials.
